About Us
Japanese opens the door to people, places and experiences. We help learners take that next step with practical lessons and a school that understands what it feels like to start.
Meet our founder
Katherine Wong
Originally from Hong Kong, Katherine moved to Tokyo in 2013 and began learning Japanese from scratch while working. Like many learners, she found that understanding a lesson and speaking comfortably in real life were two different challenges.
She went on to achieve JLPT N1 and began sharing her learning experiences on social media. Hearing from people who wanted to travel, study or build a life in Japan helped shape the school she would later create.

Our story
From learning the rules to finding your voice
Living in Japan taught Katherine how much everyday language can differ from textbook examples. Knowing a grammar rule does not always mean you can find the words when a conversation starts.
She founded Himawari Education in March 2024 to bring professional teaching methods together with that lived experience. The aim is to help students understand Japanese and feel more comfortable using it.
Katherine personally trains the teaching team, with care for the challenges and goals each student brings. Lessons connect useful language with opportunities to practise, receive feedback and try again.
“Why do you want to learn Japanese?”
That is where we start. Your reason for learning gives direction to the lessons we recommend.
What matters in our lessons
Clear understanding
Useful explanations help you see how Japanese works. Our English lesson pathway welcomes learners who do not speak Cantonese.
Practical conversation
Use what you learn in speaking activities. Our teachers guide your practice so you can develop more natural ways to express yourself.
Support as you grow
Build a learning routine suited to your level and goals, with patient teaching and feedback along the way.
Learn from where you live
A Japanese classroom within reach
Our online lessons connect learners with Japanese teachers. If you live in Singapore, Australia, the UK or elsewhere, tell us your city and preferred times so we can check suitable options.
Whether your goal is a first trip to Japan or a deeper connection with its language and culture, we would be glad to hear your story.
Why “Himawari”?
Himawari means sunflower in Japanese. Like a sunflower turning towards the light, we hope our students can keep growing towards the opportunities that matter to them.
