“Why do you want to learn Japanese?” This is the first question I ask my students. I believe learning a language goes beyond memorising words or passing an exam. Having a clear purpose helps you stay motivated and work towards the life you want.
I started Japanese from scratch too. In 2013, my interest in the language and love of a challenge took me to Tokyo, where I worked while studying Japanese. At first, I struggled to understand people and express myself. I made mistakes and was often unsure how to improve. Those experiences helped me understand the challenges learners face when Japanese is a new language. With steady effort, I eventually passed JLPT N1.
While living and working in Japan, I began sharing my experiences and Japanese learning tips on social media. I realised that many learners wanted to learn Japanese for more than an exam. They wanted to connect with people on holiday, feel at home while studying abroad, or one day build a life in Japan.

That inspired me to start teaching. After more than 13 years in Tokyo and many years in Japanese workplaces, I have learned how much textbook Japanese can differ from everyday speech. An expression can be grammatically correct and still sound unusual. I wanted to create a learning environment that reflects life in Japan.
In March 2024, I founded Himawari Education, an online Japanese language school. Our courses bring together professional methods from Japanese teacher training and my own experience of learning, living and working in Japan. We design practical, accessible lessons that help students connect what they learn with real life. I also personally train every teacher to build a caring, professional team where students can feel comfortable as they work towards their goals.
Whatever brings you to Japanese, we hope to support you on your learning journey. Like a sunflower turning towards the sun, may you grow towards your goals and discover new possibilities.
